New Delhi: A large number of people from the North-East come to the metros for education and jobs. The next time you decide to call a person from the North-East a ‘Chinki’, you could end up cooling your heels behind bars for the next five years. Growing incidents of racial discrimination and verbal abuse against citizens from the North-East have forced the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to send a letter to all the states and Union Territories, asking them to book offenders guilty of atrocity against people from the region under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act since a significant number of persons from the North-East belong to the Scheduled Tribes. Under the law, an offender can end up spending five years in jail and the accused could be denied anticipatory bail as well. And in case the police fail to act on a complaint, he/ she could be imprisoned for a term which should not be less than six months and may be extended to a year. The Act, considered draconian by many because of its harsh provisions, was put to use vigorously in Uttar Pradesh during Mayawati’s rule to check atrocities against people from [...]

Is the TIMES OF INDIA discriminating the NE victims? The paper reported that Guttu accidentally spat on Adarsh from the first floor, which was totally baseless. They victims were not in first floor, they were in the ground floor. Rony (not Guttu as TOI mentioned) spat on the ground only, not on Adarsh [a landlord]. It seems TOI partially tried to turn the victims as the first-wrong doers. See TOI report: Man from northeast thrashed, 2 held TNN | May 8, 2013, 02.45 AM IST Two persons were arrested for allegedly assaulting two people-one of them allegedly from the northeast-after one of the victims accidentally spit on one of them. The incident has been reported on Monday evening from the Munirka area in south Delhi. Adarsh Kumar and his son was arrested by the Vasant Vihar police and got bail. The victims Rony, a call centre employee, and Gutty, a DU student, were staying in a rented accommodation. Guttu had accidentally spit on Adarsh from the first floor. Adarsh allegedly got together 8-10 locals and his son and attacked the two victims.
Both were asked to give resignation letters after they were fired by their employer New Delhi, April 19, 2013 Two Northeast girls working at Magique Restaurant in Saket, Delhi were terminated from their job without prior notice. The two girls were forced by their employer to give resignation letters, but the duo denied as they did not resigned by themselves. The North East Helpline general secretary Dr. Alana Golmei and media incharge Bruce K. Thangkhal today visited the two victims at their residence in Delhi. According to the two victims, Colney (27) and Boisy (21), they were working as hostess respectively in Magique Hospitality Private Limited, at the Garden of 5 Senses, Said-Ul-Ajaib (near Saket Metro), Delhi. Colney has been working in Magique since 2008 and Boisy since 2012. Colney told the NE Helpline that she took leave on March 27 and 28, 2013 with permission from her general manager Premjit Kumar. However, when she informed the restaurant manager Puneet Saxena through phone, she was refused and being told to resign from the job immediately, as well as when she went to the workplace on March 29, 2013. “Mr. Puneet Saxena, the restaurant manager shouted at me infront of many people to leave my job and give resignation letter,” Colney told to NE Helpline. “I reported the matter to Mr. Premjit [...]

He was critically injured and has been paralyzed after he met accident last September. His employer didn’t pay his salary nor listen to his distress. He is completely paralyzed. Family members narrated the whole story to the NE Helpline. New Delhi, April 17, 2013 The plight of North East people continues in Delhi as many unfortunate incidents and stories go unreported. Many North East employees were debarred from getting their monthly salaries including one recent incident occurred in Saket, south Delhi. It was only over two weeks ago, when the North East Helpline intervened a desperate NE girl got her salary. Yet the other NE girl, who was allegedly beaten by her Thai manager (who is a business partner of Mr. Deepak Mittal, owner of the Gold Leaf Spa) last month, didn’t get justice as action was not taken up by the Delhi Police so far. The Thai national got scot-free and she had silently escaped to Thailand soon after that incident. The unsavoury tales of the North East continues still. Like many, Mr. DNG Kovalou, after his graduation started his career as a BPO executive at Gurgaon in 2004. He was doing quite well and looks promising in building a [...]

The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm yesterday, when one of the victims said that he inhaled a mosquito in his mouth and spitted out immediately on the ground. When the landlord Adarsh Kumar saw this, he began thrashing them with the help of the local people numbering around 7-10 men with wooden sticks and iron rods. Mr Adarsh Kumar owned a flat next to the building where the three victims stayed. “Even our own landlord threatened us with dire consequences if we reported to police,” said Roney, one of the victims.
